What is CORE Athletic Training?

CORE Athletic Training is a youth development organization based in Orange County, California, that uses sports and athletics as a platform to build strong character, essential life skills, and physical fitness in children and teens. Our mission is to develop strong athletes with even stronger character—on and off the field.

What is Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), and why is it important?

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which young people develop the self-awareness, self-control, interpersonal skills, and emotional intelligence needed to succeed in life. At CORE, SEL is embedded into every drill, game, and conversation. Kids don’t just play—they grow in confidence, empathy, leadership, and resilience.

How does CORE integrate SEL into sports programming?

We combine evidence-based SEL practices with age-appropriate athletic training. Each session is designed to highlight and reinforce specific traits such as:

  • Integrity (doing the right thing, even when it’s hard)

  • Teamwork (working together to achieve a shared goal)

  • Resilience (bouncing back from setbacks)

  • Empathy (understanding others’ perspectives)

  • Leadership (stepping up and inspiring others)

Coaches are trained to foster these values through guided discussions, reflection circles, and intentional team challenges that go beyond the scoreboard.

What types of sports or physical activities are included?

CORE’s curriculum incorporates a wide variety of movement-based activities, including:

  • Foundational athletic training (speed, agility, coordination)

  • Team sports (basketball, flag football, lacrosse, soccer, etc.)

  • Cooperative games and structured recess (capture the flag, gaga ball, relay races, etc.)

  • Training circuits and movement play (cone dribbles, ladder drills, etc.)

We prioritize fun, inclusion, and teamwork in every session.

In addition to our general athletic curriculum, we offer a range of specialized programs designed to meet kids where they are and inspire them to move with purpose:

  • After-School Athletics: Our signature after-school program blends physical activity with social-emotional learning. These sessions focus on general fitness, teamwork, and motor skills through fun, structured games and cooperative play. Ideal for kids who need healthy activity after a long day at school.

  • Sport-Specific Programs: Each sport-specific program integrates character development and leadership training alongside athletic instruction. For kids looking to dive deeper into their favorite sport, we offer after-school and weekend programs in:

    • Basketball Skill development, team drills, and game-play for all levels

    • Lacrosse Fundamentals of stick handling, passing, and field positioning

    • Flag Football Emphasis on agility, strategy, and team coordination

  • School Holiday Camps: During school breaks, we host high-energy, single or multi-day camps packed with movement, team games, and challenges with rewards. These camps provide a positive, engaging option for families seeking healthy ways to keep their kids active when school is out.

  • Summer Athletics Camp: CORE Camp runs all summer long and is one of our most popular offerings. Kids experience a mix of sport rotations, pop-culture themed games, themed days like water day and Coaches vs. Kids—designed to build physical stamina, social confidence, and emotional resilience. Whether your child is an aspiring athlete or just loves to play, our summer camp fosters growth, friendships, and unforgettable fun.

No matter the season or sport, CORE ensures every child has the chance to thrive physically, emotionally, and socially.

What ages and skill levels do you work with?

We offer programs for youth ages 3.5–12. Whether your child is new to sports or has years of experience, our curriculum is adaptable to all skill levels. Every child is encouraged to grow at their own pace—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Who leads the programs?

Our programs are led by experienced coaches, educators, and mentors who are deeply committed to youth development. At CORE, we hold our coaches to the highest standards—they are not only trained in physical education and social-emotional learning, but many also hold or are pursuing degrees in fields like psychology, sociology, and sports science. Our team loves sports—and even more, they love working with kids.

How does this benefit my child beyond sports?

Children who participate in our programs gain:

  • Improved communication and problem-solving skills

  • Stronger emotional regulation and self-awareness

  • A greater sense of responsibility and accountability

  • Increased motivation, focus, and goal-setting ability

These life skills are transferable to the classroom, at home, and in future leadership roles.

What makes CORE different from other youth sports programs?

We’re not just building better athletes—we’re shaping whole humans. While many programs focus only on physical performance, CORE elevates the experience by intentionally weaving in the core components of SEL in order to develop character, connection, and confidence alongside athletic ability. It’s where movement has meaning and Champions Are Made.
